Small Business Leadership Training in Massachusetts

Short answerSmall business leadership training teaches owners and managers to build culture, keep their best people, hold the team accountable and lead without being in every decision. In Massachusetts, instructor-led leadership training in a registered course can be reimbursed through the Workforce Training Fund, while leadership coaching that is entirely one-on-one cannot.

In a small business, the owner is often the leadership team, the sales team and the help desk at once. The business can only grow as far as the owner can personally reach. Leadership training is how owners and their managers spread that load, so the business runs on shared standards instead of one person’s attention.

What leadership training covers

  • Culture: defining values the team actually uses to make decisions.
  • Retention: keeping your best people engaged, which costs far less than replacing them.
  • Accountability and team health: addressing trust, conflict and follow-through, often using frameworks such as the Five Dysfunctions of a Team.
  • Productivity: finding what slows the team down and fixing it.
  • Leading by example: the behaviors that set the standard for everyone else.

Leadership training vs. leadership coaching

The format matters, especially for funding. Training is instructor-led and usually delivered to a group. Coaching is typically one-on-one and ongoing. The Workforce Training Fund reimburses registered, instructor-led training, but it excludes programs that are 100% coaching or consulting. If you plan to use state funding, choose a cohort-based course.

Leadership training options in Massachusetts

  • Free workshops and advising from the Massachusetts SBDC and SCORE touch on management and people issues.
  • Community colleges offer supervisory and management courses for frontline leaders.
  • University executive education offers leadership programs, usually priced for larger employers.
  • Peer advisory groups, including CEO forums such as the Skayle 360 CEO Roundtable, help owners work through leadership challenges with peers.
  • Private cohort training programs that include leadership modules and are registered for state reimbursement, such as SCALE UP.

How to choose leadership training

Look for training that is practical rather than theoretical, taught by someone who has led a growing team, and applied to your own people and situations during the sessions. Ask whether managers can attend with the owner, since shared language is half the benefit.

Leadership training inside SCALE UP

Module 02 of SCALE UP, Building Your Team, is 10 hours of instructor-led leadership training. It covers building a strong company culture that lasts, developing a retention strategy, strengthening marketing through the lens of leadership, tackling unproductivity, navigating the Five Dysfunctions of a Team, and leading by example. Participants apply each topic to their own team during the sessions. Because SCALE UP is registered with Commonwealth Corporation, eligible businesses can have the module reimbursed as part of the full program.
