The eligibility check
Chris runs the same four-question screen we use for every Express Grant application. Most Massachusetts employers with 100 or fewer W-2 employees qualify, and you will know where you stand before the call ends.
The fit question
If SCALE UP is not the right program for what you are trying to fix, Chris will tell you. No pitch deck, no follow-up pressure.

Who this call is for
- Owners, CEOs and managers of Massachusetts companies with 100 or fewer W-2 employees
- Nonprofit executive directors (nonprofits are eligible too)
- Leaders who want their team trained in strategy, team building, marketing, lead generation and AI, and would rather the Workforce Training Fund cover the cost
Who it is not for
- Companies with no W-2 employees in Massachusetts
- Anyone looking for a free course for themselves as an individual. The Express Grant reimburses employers, not individuals.
- Teams that need training to start in the next two weeks. Approval has to be in place before a course begins, so we plan about four weeks ahead of a cohort start.
What to have handy (optional)
No prep is needed. If you have them, these make the call faster:
- Your number of W-2 employees in Massachusetts
- Whether your state filings with DOR and DUA are current
- The one or two things you most want your team to get better at this year
What happens after
If you qualify, the path is simple. Gather three documents (Certificate of Good Standing, Certificate of Compliance and a W-9), join the 20-minute application Zoom, and wait for approval, which usually takes about 21 business days. You pay for the course as it runs, and the state reimburses the approved amount, up to $3,000 per course and $15,000 per company per calendar year.
Common questions
Is this a sales call?
It is a 15-minute eligibility check. If the program does not fit, Chris will say so.
What if we do not qualify for the Express Grant?
There are other routes, including the Workforce Training Fund General Program for larger rollouts. Chris will point you to the right one.
Who should join from our side?
The person who decides on training for your team. Your finance lead is welcome if they want to hear how reimbursement works.
How many people can we send to SCALE UP?
As many team members as you like, at no extra charge.
